During his lifetime, Okot p'Bitek was concerned that African nations, including his native Uganda, be built on African and not European foundations. Traditional African songs became a regular feature in his work, including this pair of poems, originally written in Acholi and translated into English. Lawino's words in the first poem are not fancy, but their creative patterns convey compelling images that reveal her dismay over encroaching Western traditions and her Westernized husband's behavior. Ocol's poem underlines Lawino's points and confirms her view of him as a demeaning and arrogant person whose political energies and obsession with wasting time are destructive to his family and his community.
The gripping poems of Lawino and Ocol capture two opposing approaches to the cultural future of Africa at the time and paint a picture that belongs in every modern reader's cognitive gallery.

The Song of Lawino...that was massive. Perfect. I don't know if it "translates" as well to the American society, but as someone raised in Nigeria, and married to a Nigerian...spot on. The Song of Ocol didn't register as well to me, but the politics were spot on.Product details

Song of Lawino Song of Ocol Okot p'Bitek Books Reviews
It's an interesting sad history but inspiring book about the people who end up forgetting where they came from, it brought tears to my eyes.
Hilarious!
I read this book years ago. It never left my mind. I don't like poetry except THIS ONE. Wonderful. I had to have it. It has been sold out for a long time. I was so glad when I found it on .
I received my order on time. I will buy from this seller again.
These epic poems, perhaps the finest examples of Ugandan literature, have been out of print and hard to get. Now, they are available again, in hard copy and editions, and I have gifted a couple of loved ones. I am re-reading them now, an old, used copy I brought from home in the US to my one-year stay in Uganda. Each time, they are more moving, brutally honest, and sad.
Arrived well packed, and more rapidly than I anticipated - so service very good. Thge copy is in good condition, though marked, and the marks though not damaging to the textr are a nuisance, because they seem to lack intellligent purpose.. The book is obviousloy used as advertised, but binding and pages intact and holding well together So good service and satisactory product. I would use this supplier again with confidence.. Okot p'Bitek was a Ugandan footballer of international standing and a very good perceptive poet the theme is African culture v. the West, brilliantly done.
An eye opener to the transformation caused by Imperialism.
This was required reading for a course I was taking but once I started reading I couldn't put it down. Lawino's story is the story of many women of color, being told you're not good enough even by the men we love. I recommend this to any Black woman. You are not alone and you are enough.
This book is awesome...very interesting. It just captures the scenarios of globalization and globalized people. It opens up the dialogue of diversity, respect for differences and open mind. It does all these in metaphor, and excellent poetry.
The Song of Lawino...that was massive. Perfect. I don't know if it "translates" as well to the American society, but as someone raised in Nigeria, and married to a Nigerian...spot on. The Song of Ocol didn't register as well to me, but the politics were spot on.
